Rabbi Joseph Friedman Z"l

Tzaar Baalei Chayim Initiative

Educating about the Jewish value of compassion for all creatures

We are deeply saddened to hear of Rabbi Friedman’s passing, and we are inspired by his care and compassion for all creatures.

To honor his memory, Rabbi Friedman’s family has created the Rabbi Joseph Friedman Z"l Tzaar Baalei Chayim Initiative to teach about this special mitzvah in all GrowTorah programs.

Compassion for Creatures (Tzaar Baalei Chayim) is one of GrowTorah’s 4 core values that we teach in all of our programs. This special initiative ensures that this value continues to be taught with the utmost respect, love, and empathy throughout GrowTorah’s offerings. Specifically, this initiative supports the GrowTorah Inchwormship, our college internship.

More about GrowTorah:

GrowTorah aims to cultivate a more passionate, compassionate and sustainable future driven by Torah values. We do this through experiential & environmental Torah education programs for Jewish schools, shuls, JCCs, and more.

Using the natural world as the classroom, our lessons explore the Torah relationships between humans, the earth, and our fellow creatures. Specifically, we teach around our 4 core values:

  1. Incubating Emunah

  2. Cultivating Compassion for all creatures

  3. Stewarding the Earth

  4. Reimagining Tzedakah
